Legacy, One-Size-Fits-All Search Doesn't Work

In an information-driven economy, workers without access to information find their daily tasks difficult or impossible to accomplish. The conventional wisdom amongst enterprise search vendors was that "one-size-fits-all" search tools were "good enough" for what typical users needed - and initially this approach had success, which led to the rapid growth of the market and several enterprise search vendors. Enterprises came to realize, however, that these traditional solutions had several fundamental flaws which had been masked by the industry's rapid growth.

First, these traditional solutions ignored users and focused solely on keyword search terms, such that two completely different users in drastically different circumstances would nonetheless receive identical search results if they entered the same search terms. These traditional solutions provided little to no context to their search results, which made such results largely irrelevant and therefore not useful for most users.

Second, these solutions failed to take into account the fact that users don't just want documents - they want as much useful information as possible, including work product, people, projects, expertise and relationships.

Third, legacy solutions require long query terms, time-consuming thesauri, dictionaries or ontologies, or large training sets in order to understand topics contained in a document or collection; in other words, they simply don't work 'out of the box.'  This forces corporate IT departments to spend precious budget and time customizing the highly manual system to meet their needs, not just at the initial deployment but regularly thereafter.

Relevant, "Actionable" Results Out of the Box: Welcome to Enterprise Search 3.0

Seeing this shortcoming, Recommind took a dramatically different approach: we built the CORE™ (Context Optimized Relevance Engine) platform, which that automatically customizes search results for each individual user's needs and circumstances, thereby providing maximum context and "actionability" of information.  CORE also works out of the box, by identifying the meaning of any piece of information and relating such information to other, similar pieces of information automatically .
