Legacy, One-Size-Fits-All Search Doesn't Work

In an information-driven economy, workers with limited information access find their daily tasks difficult or impossible to accomplish. The conventional wisdom amongst enterprise search vendors was that "one-size-fits-all" search tools were "good enough" for what typical users needed.  However, several fundamental flaws were unmasked by the demands of enterprise customers.

First, these basic enterprise search solutions ignored users and focused solely on keyword search terms, such that two completely different users in drastically different circumstances would receive identical search results if they entered the same search terms. These basic solutions provided little to no context to their search results, which returned largely irrelevant and not useful results to most users.

Second, these solutions failed to take into account the fact that when using enterprise search software, users don't just want documents - they want as much useful information as possible, including work product, people, projects, expertise and relationships.

Third, legacy solutions require long query terms, time-consuming thesauri, dictionaries or ontologies, or large training sets in order to understand topics contained in a document or collection.  This forces corporate IT departments to spend precious budget and time customizing the highly manual system to meet their needs, not just at the initial deployment of enterprise search but regularly thereafter.
